Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight Travel

Take an overnight flight from London to Kochi (please enquire about departures from other countries).

Day 2: Welcome to India!

Upon arrival in Kochi, exclusive airport assistance will be provided, and you’ll be greeted by a female team member who will accompany you to your hotel by car where you will check in at Old Harbour Hotel in Fort Cochin for 2 nights (Superior room).

In the evening, visit the famous dance drama of Kerala – Kathakali. Characterised by theatrical storytelling using a range of facial and hand movements, amazing costumes and extensive make-up. Be sure to arrive early, before the performance is due to begin, to watch the performers transforming into Kathakali characters.

Day 3: Kochi

In the morning, after breakfast enjoy a Heritage Walk through Fort Kochi to experience the life of this historic town. You may also like to visit the Dhobi Khana in Fort Kochi—the only place in Kerala, and one of the few in the country, where the traditional method of laundry continues.

In the evening, drive to a local family home to attend a cooking class with Nimmy Paul. She conducts cookery classes and teaches her guest students the nuances of traditional Syrian Christian, Kerala, and other recipes. Meen Molee, Appam, and Mally Charu are some of the popular Kerala dishes you will learn with Nimmy.

Day 4: Muvattupuzha

After a 2 hour drive into Muvattupuzha, you’ll check into the Indian Summer House where you will stay in a Krishna/Ganesha room for 2 nights.

In the afternoon, we will call up the boatman and ask him to canoe us across the Muvattapuzha River for an afternoon tea with Mohanan at his tea shop! Mohanan, wife and family have been running this teahouse for many years and we will enjoy its vintage beauty.

Day 5: Muvattupuzha

Your last day in Muvattupuzha will be jam-packed with traditional Indian activities:

In the morning, you’ll participate in a local toddy tapping & tasting experience with Renju. He will scale the palm trees to collect the toddy that has accumulated in large earthenware pots high up in the crown of the palm. You can drink it fresh or let it ferment to increase the alcohol content (usually 3–6%).

Return to the hotel for breakfast and enjoy the rest of the morning at your leisure.

In the afternoon, a native henna artist will visit to paint some beautiful henna designs on both your hands. The henna will remain for another 4-5 days and then fade gradually. Towards sunset, we will take an autorickshaw to visit the local 4th generation Ayurveda and Temple Store. You will be able to meet some locals and share in the community spirit of the temple before having the opportunity to receive Pushpanjali (a blessing for you and your family for a safe onward journey).

Day 6: Munnar

After driving into Munnar and checking into Windermere Estate, where you will stay in an Estate room for 2 nights, you will spend the afternoon on a complimentary guided plantation walk in the campus of the hotel where you will be introduced to various spices being grown in Kerala.

Day 7: Munnar

This day will be spent sightseeing.

Start the day with the “A Day with Tea Pickers” programme on the hotel grounds, joining pickers in the field to try selective plucking, observe the weighing process, and end with a visit to a picker’s home for traditional tea.

After lunch, drive to Srishti to see Aranya Natural and Disha—women-focused initiatives within the natural dyeing, handmade paper, and confectionery units that employ specially abled staff. Wrap up the day of sightseeing with a leisurely walk through Munnar’s local market to browse homemade chocolates, fresh produce, and the fish market before heading back to the hotel.

Day 8: Thekkady

Day 9: Thekkady

In the morning, join a morning nature walk at Periyar National Park—an interpretive sandal protection trekking programme, accompanied by a trained tribal guide, offering an excellent opportunity to observe birds, butterflies, and other wildlife through a range of habitats during the 4–5 km walk.

The rest of the day will be spent at your leisure.

Day 10: Alappuzha

After driving to Kumarakom, you will check into The Emerald Isle Heritage Villa, a homestay located on the bank of backwaters, where you will stay for 3 nights.

The rest of the day will be spent at your leisure.

Day 11: Alappuzha

You will spend your morning on-board a houseboat for a day cruise on the backwaters.

The houseboat sails through narrow canals, allowing you to see villages, schools, temples, markets by the lake, and the daily chores of locals who live by the backwaters. Lunch is included on board during the cruise. You will then return to your homestay by early afternoon.

In the evening, join the ladies of the house as they begin preparing for dinner and get hands-on experience in a typical Kerala family kitchen. Discussions covering food, traditions, local culture, and a cup of tea with light snacks will accompany this experience, which culminates in dinner.

Day 12: Alappuzha
